Small business insurance is available for businesses with 2-50 employees. The employer is able to choose a single policy for their eligible employees and sometimes their dependents as well. The insurer determines the premium for the group based on risk factors balanced over the entire group and also by using factors such as age or gender. Small businesses are guaranteed group coverage under federal law, should they choose to purchase it.
Once a small business decides to offer coverage to its employees, the coverage must be offered to all full-time employees, with the choice of whether or not to offer the coverage to part-time employees. The rules of offering coverage apply regardless of the medical condition of the employees. Preexisting conditions do not make an employee ineligible for coverage. Adding on to this, employers may also choose to offer coverage to spouses and dependents.
